Aspiration up to 13 weeks gestation

A medication is used to soften the cervix the night before. A local anesthetic is injected in the cervix. The cervix is stretched open using metal dilating rods, and a plastic tube is inserted into the uterus and connected to a vacuum device that pulls the fetus’s body apart and out. If it is uncertain that the abortion was complete, a curette may also be used to scrape any remaining fetal parts out of the uterus.

D & E (Dialation and Evacuation) / Extraction 13 weeks and above

A medication is used to soften the cervix 2 days before. A local anesthetic and sedation is given (or general anesthesia). The cervix is stretched open with metal dilating rods. The contents of the uterus (the fetus) are surgically evacuated using surgical instruments or forceps. The removed tissue is examined to account for all fetal body parts: skull, spine, ribcage, four limbs. A curette or suction is used to remove any remaining tissue not accounted for.

*Abortions past 22 weeks LMP are illegal in Missouri.
